Flowers That Bring People Together: The Tradition of Thai Flower Garlands

Flowers That Bring People Together: The Tradition of Thai Flower Garlands

If you have spent time in Thailand, you may have noticed small flower garlands hanging from car mirrors, offered at temples, placed at spirit houses, or sold by vendors along busy roads.

Known in Thai as phuang malai (พวงมาลัย), these traditional flower garlands are one of the most recognizable forms of Thai floral craftsmanship. Made by carefully threading fresh flowers together, they can be simple and delicate or highly intricate, with detailed patterns created from flowers of different shapes, colors, and fragrances.

But Thai flower garlands are more than beautiful decorations. They are part of everyday life, religious practices, ceremonies, and important relationships. A garland can be given to a parent, an elder, a monk, a guest, or someone being honored as a way of expressing respect, gratitude, affection, welcome, or good wishes.

One of the most fascinating parts of this tradition is the variety of flowers that can be used. Some are chosen for their fragrance, some for their color, some because they are easy to thread, and others because they have a long history in Thai floral arts.

Here are some of the flowers commonly associated with Thai garlands.

1. Jasmine — มะลิ

Jasmine (มะลิ) is perhaps the flower most strongly associated with Thai garlands.

Its small white flowers are highly fragrant and can be threaded individually to create delicate patterns. Jasmine is also deeply familiar in Thai culture and is often associated with purity, affection, and the love between mothers and children.

Because of its fragrance and appearance, jasmine can be used as one of the main flowers in a garland or as a detailed decorative element.

For many Thai people, the scent of jasmine is also closely connected with memories of home, family, temples, and traditional celebrations.

2. Gardenia — ดอกพุด

Gardenia (ดอกพุด) is another white, fragrant flower that can be used in traditional Thai floral arrangements and garlands.

Its clean white color and pleasant fragrance make it particularly suitable for arrangements where a fresh and elegant appearance is desired.

Gardenia flowers are also associated with purity and beauty in Thai floral traditions. Different varieties of Gardenia are cultivated in Thailand, and the flowers may appear in traditional decorative work as well as everyday gardens.

Although jasmine is more immediately recognizable as a garland flower, gardenia offers another beautiful example of how white, fragrant flowers have an important place in Thai floral culture.

3. Crown Flower — ดอกรัก

Crown flower (ดอกรัก) is known in Thai as dok rak, with rak meaning “love.”

Its small white flowers are traditionally used in Thai garland-making and other forms of floral craftsmanship. The flowers can be arranged into intricate patterns and combined with other blooms to create detailed designs.

The flower's name gives it an especially fitting place in a tradition often used to express affection and respect.

Crown flower is also familiar from traditional Thai garlands used in ceremonies and offerings, making it an important part of Thailand's floral heritage.

4. Marigold — ดอกดาวเรือง

Marigold (ดอกดาวเรือง) brings a completely different appearance to a garland.

Its bright yellow and golden color can create a strong contrast with white flowers such as jasmine and crown flower. Marigolds are also traditionally associated with auspiciousness, prosperity, and good fortune.

The Thai name dao rueang is often interpreted in a positive way, and marigolds are widely used in Thailand for ceremonies and occasions associated with good wishes.

In a garland, the flowers can provide both color and symbolic meaning.

5. Rose — ดอกกุหลาบ

Roses (ดอกกุหลาบ) may not be the first flower people think of when they imagine a traditional Thai garland, but roses can also be incorporated into Thai floral arrangements and garland designs.

Their greatest advantage is their wide range of colors and their association with love and affection.

Rose petals and smaller rose varieties can be used to introduce color into a garland, while the flowers themselves can add a more contemporary or romantic feeling.

This is another example of how traditional Thai floral craftsmanship can adapt to different flowers and styles rather than being limited to one fixed combination.

6. Orchid — ดอกกล้วยไม้

Orchids (ดอกกล้วยไม้) are among Thailand's most famous flowers and are also used in floral arrangements and decorative garlands.

Orchids are available in many colors and forms, making them useful when a garland needs a more colorful or elegant appearance. Their long-lasting flowers can also be advantageous for decorative purposes.

Different orchid varieties may be used depending on availability and the style of the arrangement.

Although orchids are strongly associated with Thailand today, their role in floral decoration also reflects the country's long-standing appreciation of flowers as both natural beauty and artistic material.

7. Ixora — ดอกเข็ม

Ixora (ดอกเข็ม) is recognizable by its clusters of small, star-shaped flowers.

It can be found in several colors, including red, orange, pink, yellow, and white. The flowers grow closely together, giving them a naturally clustered appearance that works well in floral decoration.

The Thai name dok khem is traditionally connected with the word khem, meaning “sharp.” This has led to symbolic associations with sharpness of thought, intelligence, and learning.

For this reason, ixora is sometimes included in auspicious floral arrangements, particularly those connected with education and learning.

Its bright colors also make it useful for adding contrast to a predominantly white garland.

8. Globe Amaranth — ดอกบานไม่รู้โรย

Globe amaranth (ดอกบานไม่รู้โรย) has small, rounded flower heads that come in colors such as purple, pink, white, and red.

The Thai name ban mai ru roi can be translated roughly as “blooming without fading.” Because the flowers retain their appearance for a long time, the plant has naturally developed associations with lastingness and endurance.

Globe amaranth can also be dried and preserved, which makes it useful in traditional floral crafts beyond fresh arrangements.

Its small, compact flower heads add texture and color to garlands and can be combined with larger or more delicate flowers.

9. Champaca — จำปีและจำปา

Champaca (จำปี / จำปา) is especially valued for its fragrance.

The flowers of champaca are small and elegant, with colors ranging from creamy white to yellow and orange depending on the species and variety. Their strong, distinctive fragrance has made them important in Thai traditions involving flowers, offerings, perfumes, and scented arrangements.

The flowers are also familiar in Thai floral culture because of their fragrance and association with traditional Thai gardens.

Unlike some flowers that are chosen mainly for their color or shape, champaca demonstrates how fragrance itself can be an important part of floral tradition.

More Than Nine Flowers

These nine flowers are not an exhaustive list of everything that can appear in Thai garlands. Floral designs can vary according to region, occasion, season, availability, and the skill and style of the person making the garland.

The same flower can also serve different purposes. One may become the main element of the design, another may form a border, while another may simply provide a contrasting color or fragrance.

This flexibility is one of the reasons Thai garland-making is such an interesting form of floral art.

Why Are White Flowers So Common?

One noticeable feature of many traditional Thai garlands is the importance of small white flowers, particularly jasmine and crown flower.

White flowers provide a clean visual foundation for intricate patterns, while their small size makes them practical for detailed threading. Their fragrances also contribute to the sensory experience of a fresh garland.

Colorful flowers such as marigold, ixora, roses, orchids, and globe amaranth can then be added to create contrast and visual interest.

The result can be both delicate and surprisingly elaborate.

A Garland Can Say What Words Cannot

The most meaningful part of a Thai flower garland is perhaps not any single flower, but the gesture of giving it.

A garland may be presented to an elder as a sign of respect, given to someone as a gesture of affection, offered during a religious occasion, or used to welcome an important guest.

In this way, flowers become part of human relationships.

The act of choosing flowers, arranging them, and presenting them to another person turns something temporary and natural into a meaningful gesture.

Flowers, Meanings, and Context

Thai flower culture also shows us why it can be difficult to divide plants neatly into categories of “lucky” and “unlucky.”

A flower may have one traditional association because of its name, another because of its appearance, and yet another because of how it is used.

A plant that someone might avoid planting around their home because of an old belief can still be admired for its beauty. Another flower may have a symbolic meaning in one context but simply be chosen for its color or fragrance in another.

Flower garlands make this especially clear.

Jasmine, gardenia, crown flower, marigold, rose, orchid, ixora, globe amaranth, and champaca do not all have the same cultural associations. Yet they can come together in a single piece of floral art.

The flowers do not need to have identical meanings to belong together.

A Tradition That Continues to Change

Thai flower garlands are a traditional art, but they are not frozen in the past.

Modern garlands may combine traditional flowers with newer designs and colors. Contemporary florists and garland makers can experiment with different flowers while still using traditional techniques.

At the same time, younger generations may not attach the same importance to every traditional belief as older generations do.

What remains is the basic idea behind the tradition: flowers can help people express feelings that are sometimes difficult to put into words.

From a simple roadside garland to an elaborate ceremonial arrangement, the flowers may be temporary, but the gesture can carry lasting meaning.

Perhaps that is what makes the Thai flower garland so special.

It is not simply a collection of flowers threaded together.

It is a small piece of Thai culture that brings beauty, tradition, and people together — one flower at a time.
